Cleon Whitis, age 73, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at his residence.
Cleon was born on March 2, 1944 in Shopville, KY to the late Rolla “Buster” Whitis and Sophie Mae Inabnitt Whitis. He was a member of Somerset First Church of the Nazarene. Cleon worked as a Machine operator for Norfolk Southern Railroad where he retired from in 2003. He was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Air Force. He loved UK basketball, gardening and carpentry work.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lee Hall Whitis, whom he married on December 23, 1966 in Jellico, TN; two daughters, Sharon (and Steve) Foster of Somerset and Kim (and Mike) Austin of Somerset; a niece and nephew whom they raised as their own; Charles (and Tabitha ) Polson of Muncie, Ind. and Loretta (and Gene) Whitaker of Somerset; seven grandchildren, Josh Meece, Tasha Begley, Nicki Beasley, Jessie Foster, Tyler Caldwell, Cortney Caldwell and James Whitaker; eleven great grandchildren, Ayden & Brylee Beasley, Kaitlyn Cox, Haley & Morgan Meece, Jaden Crouch, Kierren & Trinity Meece, Brayden & Adysen Davis, and Kyrsten Baker; a special niece; Regena “Bean” Denham; a lifelong friend, Wayne Phelps; and Scarlett, his beloved dog that was his pride and joy.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, James Whitis, Carl Whitis and Leroy Whitis; and two great grandchildren, Seth Meece and Makayla Cox.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 26, 2017 after 5:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 1:00pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Nichols and Bro. Bubba Jennings officiating. Burial will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tyler Caldwell, Steve Foster, Terry Tomilson, Wayne Phelps, Dewey Sutton and Allen Beasley. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.
